The very famous Vernaccia of san Gimignano is a well-known white wine that can boast the title of the first Italian wine to receive the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) mark.

It is a wine whose origins are difficult to identify, because it sank in very ancient times. It is known, however, that already around the 13th century it was considered a prized wine, and that even Dante mentions it in a passage of the Divine Comedy.
